California's "Great Places"

The Golden State offers endless possibilities

The United States Travelers League reveals our inaugural "100 Great American Places" list starting in early 2021. Here are five early nominees for California, the Golden State, including Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 (pictured). (photo, James Rathmell, Unsplash)

[Our thoughts are with the folks affected by this summer's terrible wildfires.]

1. Muir Woods National Park-- Mill Valley

Walk among old growth coast redwoods, cooling their roots in the fresh water of Redwood Creek and lifting their crowns to reach the sun and fog.

2. Grammy Museum -- Los Angeles

The GRAMMY Museum explores and celebrates the creative process; the art and technology of the recording process; and the enduring legacy of all forms of recorded music.

3. Balboa Park -- San Diego

Balboa Park is home to more than 16 museums, multiple performing arts venues, lovely gardens, trails, and many other recreational attractions, including the San Diego Zoo.

4. Fisherman’s Wharf -- San Francisco

Rich maritime history comes alive as you encounter local fishermen, catch a cruise along the waterfront, or explore the sights at historic piers, like the bustling Pier 39.

5. Joshua Tree National Park -- Twentynine Palms

Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together, and a fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds.
